I tinkered with the Beretta a little bit more today.  I lightened the spring in the firing pin block, it didn’t help as much as I thought it would, and I lightened the firing pin spring itself so I think the light strike issue may be fixed, I didn’t get a chance to shoot it after that though so we’ll see.  I also lost a pin when I was taking the firing pin out.  Fortunately it was one of 2 pins that keeps the safety in position, and it works just fine with only one.  So, lesson learned: if you ever need to take a Beretta apart, don’t or do it in a giant plastic bag to contain all the little parts that go flying.  I started my Airman Leadership school today, which is probably going to be super cool, so I may not be doing anything Beretta related for a bit, but we will see.

I took it apart the other night, polished the hammer and sear and installed a new main spring.  I’m using Wolff 1911 mainsprings, because they are cheaper, more available, come in more weights, and well, they work.   After using lots of foul language I got it back together, the hardest part was the sear spring and the magazine release.  The trigger is much nicer now, although I do need a slightly heavier mainspring as I got some light primer strikes today.  I’m thinking a new, lighter trigger spring will help too but I don’t know where to find one at the moment.  Maybe I’ll polish the sear and hammer a bit more, I don’t want to go too far though, then I’ll need new parts which will cut into the budget, a new sear is like 10 bucks, and a new hammer is like 20 bucks.  So, total cost so far, 6 bucks for a mainspring.  Next up:  Sights.  I’m also considering removing the firing pin block safety.  I wouldn’t normally do that, but because it’s going to be a range only gun, I’m thinking about it.

So, I will admit that I was kind of hesitant to post stuff about guns I own, but oh well.  I got this gun a few months back, it’s a Beretta model 92FS.  I like it, it shoots good, but I want it to shoot better.  The Army has customized and accurized these guns for their Marksmanship Unit to the point where they will shoot .87 inch groups at 50 yards, which for a handgun is absolutely crazy.  There are custom made guns costing over 3000 dollars that barely shoot half as good.  Of course they have almost unlimited money and resources.  I don’t have that.  I’ve set a budget of 350 dollars, most of which will go towards a barrel, but that’ll be later, cheap and easy stuff first.  And I still want it to look…subtle.

Here is a list of what I’m thinking of doing:

Trigger job, new barrel, adjustable sights, barrel bushing.

I might be able to get some other stuff done too, but just about anything else involves lots of machining.

Anyone with any suggestions give me a holler.

So, I’m not really sure what to talk about here, and I’m not entirely sure I could just pick one thing to talk about here given all the time in the world.  There will probably be a number of things I talk about here, mostly guns, maybe my car, the occasional beer or two.  Hmm, maybe the inane ranting of a person obsessed with getting more accuracy out of a Beretta without major surgery?   We’ll see.
